Puerto Lirquen, Chile

Project Description

Puerto Lirquen is one of the main ports of the VIIIth region of Chile. This multi-purpose facility currently handles over 3 million tonnes of cargo per annum. The product handled at the port includes containers, fertiliser, forestry products and general cargoes.

In 1999, Cullen Grummitt & Roe was commissioned to prepare a master plan for the terminal considering a 30-year development period. Short, medium and long-term development arrangements were proposed. This master planning work included consideration of:

  • Trade growth in Chile
  • Berth development requirements
  • Open yard storage requirements for containers and weather insensitive products
  • Covered storage requirements for weather sensitive products
  • Development alternatives for sites for lease to associated companies.

In 2000, CGR was commissioned to complete the basic and detailed engineering design for the first stage of the Pier 2 wharf. The design involves extending the pier from a structure which is currently 200m long and 26m wide, providing two berths to one which is 450m long by 45m wide with four berths available. The seismic nature of the site and the extreme variability of the soil conditions on the site were important considerations in the design process. Construction of the first stage of the expansion of Pier 2 commenced on site in October 2000.

In accordance with the Master Planning recommendations, the client has also decided to develop additional storage yards in the terminal to handle the increased container trade. Cullen Grummitt & Roe has been commissioned to complete the design of the first stage of this yard development.
