New Ferry Terminal 5, Holyhead, United Kingdom

Project Description

CGR provided specialist design support services to Civil & Marine Consultants Ltd related to the Terminal 5 development at Holyhead for Stena Line. Civil & Marine Consultants was engaged by the contractor, Mowlem Marine Ltd, to provide ongoing engineering design support during the construction phase of the works.

To enable Mowlem Marine Ltd to consider options to improve the construction schedule, CGR assisted Civil & Marine Consultants by investigating pre-cast soffit alternatives for the dolphin pile caps. Precast soffit slabs were designed using finite element analysis (FEA) methods in order to gain weight advantages to suit the available cranage, thus avoiding mobilisation of additional plant.

Detailed drawings, bar schedules and calculations were provided to the client’s engineer for approval prior to construction.

Critical elements required of the design were minimising the weight of the pre-cast soffit unit while at the same time maximising the use of the reinforcement that had already been ordered for an in-situ pile cap solution.

The work onsite was successfully completed by Mowlem Marine Ltd.
