Cyclone Damage,Townsville, Australia

Project Description

In early April 2000, Cyclone Tessi caused widespread damage to the Port at Townsville. Waves removed rock from  the protective breakwater and above average rainfall caused siltation in the stormwater drainage and main navigation channels. Subsequently, an insurance claim was lodged by the Port of Townsville.

CGR carried out a site investigation five days after the cyclone had passed. CGR gathered wind data, carried out a wave hindcast and determined a return period for the cyclone to check the adequacy of the breakwater design. Rainfall and siltation data were obtained to investigate the claim of extraordinary siltation in the main navigation channels.
